Titanic, nicknamed the "unsinkable", sank within two hours and forty minutes to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The biggest disaster in shipping to date claimed 1517 victims.

The causes of the tragedy remained hidden till 1 September 1985. It was then that Dr. Robert Ballard's expedition succeeded in discovering the exact location of the wreckage. After working hard for years, they brought the artifacts laying 4000 meter deep to the surface with the help of special robot technology developed for this purpose.

RMS Titanic, INC. has organized an exhibition of the artifacts it owns to make the surviving memories of the disaster accessible for larger audiences.

At the Titanic exhibition, a collection of several thousand artifacts retrieved from the bottom of the ocean can be seen. The exhibition is trying to make the event more hands-on for visitors through the reconstruction of some of the ship's rooms - first class and steerage cabins, corridors and the boiler room. The expert background noises, music, and the special lighting all help visitors of the exhibition experience the excitement of the Southampton launch, the luxury of the first class, the puritan style of the third class, the hard work of those working next to the boilers in the engine room, and the unbreakable strength the captain's bridge.

The incomparable atmosphere and uniqueness of the Titanic exhibition are solely down to the excellently preserved and almost hands-on artifacts. Among these, you can find china preserved in fantastic condition, highly decorated crystal bottles and personal belongings of the travelers, including glasses, wallets, and clothes.

The exhibition appeals to all senses of the visitors. They can touch a real iceberg so that they can sense how mercilessly cold the water was on the night of the disaster.

September 2007. - 09. September - -

The Debrecen Jazz Days looks back on a history of 36 years.

WHERE JAZZ IS ALWAYS IN

Starting out from the south of the United States, jazz used to be the music of protest but by today it has become the international synthetic folk music of the 20th and the 21st centuries. The inclusion of the Debrecen Jazz Festival among the prestigious events of this genre can be attributed not only to the list of high-quality international celebrities that appear on the stage but also to the special atmosphere that has evolved at Lake Békás in the city's Nagyerdõ district. Jazz is said to be in fashion again, but it has constantly been in for 36 years now in Debrecen since the first festival was held. One of the largest jazz festivals in Central and Eastern Europe will feature concerts by international as well as internationally known Hungarian musicians and singers. The performers include Tomasz Stanko, a living legend of jazz, often called as the Polish Miles Davis, the Adam Pieronczyk Trio, which produces unmistakable music with tenor and soprano saxophones, the Colors, and Krzysztof ?ciera?ski and his band. The Hungarian "team" consists of Djabe, the country's best jazz-world band, the Debrecen Jazz Group, the local champion of the music, and the Zakar Trio, which plays mainstream jazz.

Even strata of the population usually less interested all year round in cultural events are drawn to this event held on the last week of summer. Visitors may gain a glimpse into a culture they’re not really familiar with and can become part of it. They can get to know the traditions and holidays of a several thousand-year-old culture, and in addition see artists and performers who will offer them a once in a lifetime experience.

The tenth jubilee festival represents Jewish culture with several branches of art (theatre, film, fine arts, photography, oratory, painting, jazz, operetta, klezmer, pop music, literature, chamber music), youth programs, bazaars, open musical programs and coffeehouse literature eves. Our program series follows traditions, grows from them while renewing and enriching itself every year. Due to the jubilee the festival has gone through a makeover, its ticketing system has also changed and entry tickets will be available in 138 offices of the TICKETPRO network.

At the beginning of life on earth, these caves served as refuge for animals, then the prehistoric man (the "Hunter of Buda) appearing roughly half a million years ago. The entrance to the caves were hidden by lush vegetation and dense forests. The interiors had flowing water so this valuable resource made this a comfortable dwelling.

Later the numerous small caves were connected to each other enabling an entire society to live within. With modern man building hoses over these caves on the hillside of castle hill, cellars were developed out of them which were used as wine cellars, refuge from nomad attacks. During the Turkish invasion of Hungary, these caves were even extended away from the hill to points many kilometers away, under the seiging attackers. Using these for food routes and ultimately at the collapse, an escape route for the defenders. In the Hungarian history of the middle ages, parts of the caves were also used as torture chambers, jails and even as a treasury.

In the 1930s, as part of the wartime defense program, the complex of cellars was converted into a shelter large enough to accommodate as many as ten thousand people at the same time. Reinforced with concrete, it was used for supply storage as well as a large hospital for wounded soldiers. During the Cold War, it served as a secret military installation.

Robert Ballard’s expedition succeeded in discovering the exact location of the wreckage.

The exhibition is trying to make the event more hands-on for visitors through the reconstruction of some of the ship’s rooms – first class and steerage cabins, corridors and the boiler room.

The expert background noises, music, and the special lighting all help visitors of the exhibition experience the excitement of the Southampton launch, the luxury of the first class, the puritan style of the third class, the hard work of those working next to the boilers in the engine room, and the unbreakable strength the captain’s bridge.

Since 1991, the Titanic exhibition has attracted 16 million visitors in 18 countries of the world. Some extraordinary statistics from the past few years: Japan – 3,000,000, visitors Hamburg – 1,042,000 visitors, Chicago –861,000 visitors, London – 720,000 visitors, St Petersburg – 820,000 visitors.

In Central Europe, Hungary is the first country to welcome the exhibition thanks to ShowTime Budapest and RTL Klub. The two companies’ cooperation is outstanding: Never before has such a big exhibition been organized by private companies without government support. The Titanic exhibition will welcome visitors at the Millenáris Park from 2 September to 26 November 2007.

On this day, Hungarians celebrate King Stephen and the founding of the Hungarian state.

Stephen was born around AD 970. He was elected prince in 997, and was crowned king in Esztergom on Christmas in 1000, with a crown sent by Pope Sylvester II. During his reign, he created the Christian Hungarian Kingdom from the Hungarian tribes, and strengthened the Church in Hungary exceedingly.

King Stephen died in 1038. He was canonized on August 20, 1083, hence theday of St. Stephen. From then on, Hungarians have visited his grave in Székesfehérvár on this day every year.
St. Stephen's Day became Hungary's national day, and stayed that way until 1945, when, on account of its religious and patriotic content, it was prohibited by the Communists. The new regime timed the creation of the new Socialist constitution on August 20, 1949. From 1950 to 1989, the people's republic was celebrated on this day, which became the “Constitution Day” and the “Day of the New Bread”. It is impossible to overlook the sarcasm of the Communists: they celebrated the Communist republic instead of the Christian kingdom, and the new bread — atheism — instead of the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ.

Since 1990, August 20 is once again St. Stephen's Day in Hungary. The most important events in Budapest take place around the Basilica. This is where the procession of the Holy Right Hand starts: at the front the relic of St. Stephen's right hand is carried, followed by thousands of Christians and non-Christians alike. Unfortunately, this march is only allowed to proceed on some side streets, while the pagan members of the Gay Pride Parade and the Love Parade can march in all their “glory” on the main avenues of the city.

The pictures were taken on the festivities of August 20, 2003: the first two show the procession of the Holy Right Hand, the last one shows the Basilica.

About the ring:

The Hungaroring circuit is 19 km from the centre of Budapest, alongside the M3 motorway at the border of the village, Mogyoród. The track is in a natural valley, surrounded by 50 hectares of rolling hillside. With this exceptional natural advantage, almost 80 percent of the racetrack is visible from any point. This is the reason why it is called "The Shallow Plate", it is because the spectators are watching races sitting by the side of an imaginary plate.

At the Grand Opening, the total length of the Hungaroring was 4013,786 metres. A minor correction was made during 1989, as a result of cutting an S-curve combination, the circuit became faster, giving an extra overtaking opportunity to the drivers; hence, the full track length was reduced to 3968 metres.

The smallest radius of a curve is 20 metres, while the largest is 400 metres. The full length of the start-finish line is 700 metres; the top speed here is approximately 320 km/h. The track is at its widest here: 15 metres, elsewhere the width varies between 10 and 11 metres, relative to the possible highest speed.

The surface structure is a triple layer of asphalt, 5 cm thick each on 20-cm thick rubble and 20-cm thick concrete. The relative level difference between the highest and lowest point of the Ring is 36 metres. The greatest slope is 6,4%, while the largest descent is as much as 6,7%.The Hungaroring circuit meets the highest technical requirements and has become one of safest racetracks in the world. Due to the reconstruction works being carried out at Hungaroring Circuit - being negotiated and agreed with the FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile), FOM (Formula One Management Ltd.) and the local ASN, the National Automobile Sport Federation of Hungary - in the year 2003 the start-straight has become 202 metres longer while the circuit length changed to 4384,08 metres.

It is held on August 26th (Saturday), for the seventh time since it's inception. It is waiting for you with new programs, events, bands and more floats the at previous Budapest Parades. They are also trying for a new image which may make some people happy and others sad... less smut and more "real entertainment" for a change. Though, knowing the local hunger for a pretty site, there will be lots of girls on those floats that parade down Andrassy street to Heroes' Square. It is difficult to hide the world renown beautiful Hungarian girls who are everywhere, but for this day, converging into this downtown area. The reshaping of the list of performers and events is to open up alternative sorts of entertainment and music trends besides the usual programs presented in the years past.

Organizers are hoping to attract at least the same numbers 600,000 people who showed up last year to celebrate the event. There will be a convoy of more than 50 floats and tractor trailer pulled mobile stages set up to roll past the festive crowds. Hungary’s top DJs are joined by several dozen world stars invited from all over Europe and over seas. The parade at one point does end with an elaborate fireworks display, and then the fun really begins for those that still have the energy. Many clubs across the capital city offer "post-parade parties" which last until dawn!

So say good- bye to the Budapest summer with an authentic carnival feeling.

REMEMBER: Don't drink and drive !! Hungary has 0% tolerance-blood level !!

Taxi companies in Budapest,

Taxis aren’t cheap anymore and, considering the excellent public transportation network, you won’t really have to use them much. We’ve heard from several readers who were grossly overcharged and even threatened by taxi drivers in Budapest, so taking a taxi in this city should be approached with caution. Not all taxi meters are set at the same rates, and some are much more expensive than others. The taxis with no name on the door and only a removable light box on the roof are the most likely to cheat you. Never get into a taxi that does not have a yellow license plate (as required by law), the logo of a reputable taxi firm on the side doors and a table of fares posted on the dashboard inside.

Budapest taxis have yellow number plates and yellow taxi signs on them. The sum to be paid at the end of the journey consists of three different parts:
- the basic fee, which does not depend on the distance you travel
- the kilometer fare, based on the actual distance you took
- the waiting tariff, which is used if the taxi has stopped or advances slower than 15 kms/hour

Taxi companies use different tariffs, there is one thing, however, which is common in them, there is a maximum price applied. If you take a taxi, the tariffs displayed on the dashboard and on the right rear window cannot be different. Only the Price on the dashboard can be lower..

These prices are valid for all trips started in Budapest, including the railway stations and airport terminals. In case you take a taxi in Budapest and your destination is outside the city border, the driver may ask you to pat the return fare to the border.

All cabs are equipped with taxi meters, which prints you the receipts.

The telephone numbers of reliable taxi firms in Budapest - in order of preference. You can call them from anywhere (the dispatchers usually speak English), and they’ll arrive in a matter of minutes. Make sure you know the number of the phone you’re calling from, as that’s how they establish your address.

The best places to find taxis are in ranks at bus and train stations, near markets and around main squares. But you can flag down cruising taxis anywhere at any time. At night, taxis illuminate their sign on the roof when vacant. If an independent taxi stops on the street, wave it on and wait for one with the logo of a reputable firm emblazoned on its door.

Taking a taxi in the provinces is almost always without incident, and because fewer people take them than in Budapest the driver will usually be courteous and helpful. It’s a different case altogether in Budapest, and you should be on your guard at all times when taking a taxi in the capital. If all goes well, passengers usually tip drivers about 10% (or round up to the nearest 100 Ft, even if it means tipping a little less or a little more).
